PHOBOPHOBES MOUSTACHE MIKE

Returning after the success of their wonderfully demented 2018 debut Miniature World, South London's Phobophobes appear to be up to their old tricks on their sleazy-sounding new single 'Moustache Mike'. Opening with a theatrical chord sequence that wouldn't sound out of place at the start of a shimmering ABBA track, haunting synths tumble through the chromatic scale adding the eerie intonation that they're known for. Tremelo-heavy guitars slice likes knives, adding emphasis in all the right places, whilst a taunting bass line creeps incessantly beneath vocalist Jamie Taylor's distinctive baritone. Inspired by a mysterious banjo player and 60s icon/Warhol muse Baby Jane Holzer, 'Moustache Mike' is a scathing ode to America's hyper-consumerist culture. Taylor elaborates:"I can’t stand American politics, I can’t stand what they do to the planet, but at the same time, there is a sort of intrigue from all sorts of eras, from the ‘50s to watching American TV when you were a kid. You’re still drawn to it.” Witness Phobophobes' writhing live show for yourself at London's Peckham Audio on the 9th of April. -Holly Mullineaux
